The Neutral Corner - Announcements

14 August 2008 - R&J official for World Youth Championships
Boxing Australia proposes to fund the travel, meal and accommodation expenses for one Australian AIBA Referee, to attend the 2008 World Youth Championships.

This event will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico, from 25th October to - 1st November 2008. It is expected that the official will arrive in Guadalajara on 23 October and depart 2nd November.

PLEASE NOTE: AIBA has issued a ruling that ONLY those RJ who submitted their AIBA data-collection questionnaires and photograph prior to 31 July will be considered for AIBA international events this year.

This means that the following Australian AIBA RJ are the only potential candidates for this position: David Pike (VIC), Ray Adams (VIC), Max Sulejmani (WA), Steven Warn (ACT), Stephen Donkin (NSW), Wayne Rose (NSW).

Any of the above R&J wishing to nominate for this position should advise the R&J Committee by email no later than Thursday 28th August. The Committee will then recommend a candidate to Boxing Australia's Board within a week.

13 August 2008 - BAI Board's thanks
Boxing Australia's chairperson, Ted Tanner, wrote the following to the Committee on 1st August:

On behalf of the BAI Board I thank all the R&J's for their high standard of performance and hard work at the 2008 Australian Women's Championships and Youth Team Selection Trials.

I think it highly indicative of the respect held for the R&J's performance that not one decision at the tournament was subject to protest.

We should be grateful if the BAI Board's appreciation could at the appropriate time be brought to the attention of the R&J's.

Kind regards

Ted Tanner, Chairperson

23 July 2008 - Computer Scoring System training

We are refining a simple manual to make it easier to use the Swiss Timing scoring software, and when completed this will be placed on the BAI R&J website.

However prospective users would benefit most from a structured training session. The session would take about three hours and would need to be done in a room away from noise and interruption. Ideally, it should be done the day before or on the morning of a tournament so that your officials can then set up the system for the tournament and have the trainer sitting beside them when using the system, to assist and provide advice if needed.

It is highly desirable that most of your R&J attend such a training session, so that you are not reliant on a single individual to set up the system.

If your state/territory association would like a training session for R&J officials, your state R&J coordinator or secretary should email the R&J Committee Chair to initiate arrangements.

The cost of travel and accommodation for the trainer would need to be met by your state/territory association.

23 July 2008 - AIBA database, Australian database

AIBA are compiling a new database of international R&J officials. All AIBA R&J in Australia have been asked to submit their details to Boxing Australia on the AIBA form provided, together with a passport-style digital photo in JPG format, for forwarding to AIBA. If you have not yet returned your form and photo to BAI, please do so asap. Officials whose forms are received after 31st July will not be considered by AIBA for any international events in 2008.

Boxing Australia will also be doing a data collection exercise in the near future. We will be contacting each Australian and Oceania R&J and seeking some basic details similar to those sought by AIBA. This will remedy the defects in our existing records, and will facilitate the transition to a new accreditation policy late this year. Part of the new accreditation process will be the issue of RJ record books (similar to boxer record books) to allow officials to record their R&J activity including courses, in the same way as AIBA R&J currently do.

11 June 2008 - AIBA Rule Changes

AIBA recently announced amended rules for international boxing, effective from May 2008 until 31 August 2008, i.e. till after the Beijing Olympics.

You can view the new rules document at http://www.aiba.org under the heading "New AIBA Docs" on the right-hand side of the screen.

Whilst you may wish to examine the new rules, you should NOT attempt to implement them at this stage.

This is because further major changes to rules will be announced immediately after the Olympics. It is understood that this will include a change for senior male boxers from 4 rounds of 2 minutes duration, to 3 rounds of 3 minutes duration.

Boxing Australia's R&J Committee will review the new (post-Olympic) rules as soon as they become available and will recommend appropriate changes to BAI's rules to ensure we align with the new international requirements.

The BAI R&J Handbook will also be revised to reflect the changes.

Boxing Australia will notify you via this website and via State Secretaries when it has determined a start date for new rules in Australia.

6 June 2008 - R&J nominations for 26-27 July event in Melbourne

On Sat 26 July and Sun 27 July 2008, Boxing Victoria will host two simultaneous events on behalf of Boxing Australia, at the Reggio Calabria Club, 476 Brunswick Rd, Brunswick (Melbourne).

The events will be the 2008 Australian Womens Championships, and the 2008 Youth Team Selections for the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Boxing Australia invites referees and judges accredited to Australian level or above to nominate for official duties at this dual event.

There is no funding for travel and accommodation of R&J, so these costs will be at own expense, unless member associations choose to subsidise their attending R&J.
Officials will need to be available from 7.30am for the weigh-in on Saturday 26th , till the conclusion of the event on Sunday 27th July. We will endeavour to schedule the sessions so that the Sunday session finishes by late afternoon, but session timings will not be finalised till boxer nominations have closed.

R&J planning to attend should send their name and contact details to BAI's R&J Committee at rjcommittee@boxing.org.au as soon as possible, and no later than Friday 11 July, so that the Committee can plan the duties roster for the event.

Australian R&J are expected to officiate effectively at an Australian Championships or major national selection event every three years, in order to maintain their accreditation. R&J will be able to maintain their AUST accreditation by officiating at this event.

In addition, it is proposed to conduct examinations for Australian Judge/Referee accreditation at the Womens' Championships at this event, if there are candidates to be so assessed. Any state R&J wishing to be assessed for their Australian badge at this event should ensure that their state/territory R&J coordinator submits the candidate's name, contact details, and a summary of their experience, to the BAI R&J Committee at rjcommittee@boxing.org.au as soon as possible, and no later than Friday 11 July.

27 April 2008 - Wayne Rose selected for Beijing Olympics
AIBA has announced the R&J to officiate at the Beijing Olympic Games. Australia will be represented by Wayne Rose (NSW). This will be Wayne's  second Olympic Games, and we congratulate him on this appointment. The list of R&J (updated June 2008) is available via the following web link: http://www.aiba.org/en-US/news/ozqsp/newsId/716/news.aspx

9 April 2008 - R&J Handbook now online
The Australian R&J Handbook is now available online from the R&J Documents page. It is a PDF file which you can view, save or print provided you have PDF reader software installed (such as Adobe Reader). The file is 1.5 megabytes in size, so will take a while to download if you have a slow internet connection. However it will only take a moment with a broadband connection. If you find anything that you believe needs to be corrected or added to the handbook, please let us know so that the next edition can be updated appropriately.

26 March 2008 - Selection of Australian R&J member of Oceania Boxing Association R&J Commission
The Board of Boxing Australia has advised the Oceania Boxing Federation that Australia's nominee for the Oceania R&J Commission is AIBA referee Max Sulejmani from Western Australia. The nomination will be submitted for approval by Oceania Executive at their meeting in Samoa in late April.

26 March 2008 - Selection of Australian R&J  for Oceania Olympic Qualifying Event
The Board of Boxing Australia has selected AIBA referee Steve Donkin from NSW to officiate at the Oceania Championships & Olympic Qualifying Event in Apia, Samoa, 21-25 April.

17 March 2008 - Australian R&J member of Oceania Boxing Association R&J Commission
The chairman of the Oceania Boxing Association's R&J Commission has invited BAI to nominate an AIBA-qualified RJ to serve on that Commission. The Commission members normally meet in person annually at Oceania Championships, and will meet this year at the Olympic Qualifying Event in Samoa 21-25 April. The appointed member would generally be expected to serve on juries and/or to examine candidates at such events rather than officiate in the ring. The ability to work harmoniously with representatives from other Oceania countries is an essential requirement for this position.

Nominees should state their full name, postal address, telephone contact numbers, and email address (if any), together with a brief summary of their international experience and any experience on juries or examining of candidates. Nominations to be sent by email to rjcommittee@boxing.org.au or by fax to BA on 03 9926 1331 or by post to Boxing Australia, Sports House, Albert Road, Albert Park, VIC 3206.

Nominations must be received by 5pm on Thursday 20 March 2008. The Australian R&J Committee will then recommend a candidate to Boxing Australia's Board whose decision will be forwarded to OBA for ratification at its meeting in Samoa during the Olympic Qualifying event in April.  If possible, the selected nominee would attend the qualifying event in Samoa and serve as a juror.

15 March 2008 - Australian R&J Representative to Oceania Olympic Qualifying Event
The Oceania Olympic Qualifying Event will take place in Apia, Samoa, from 21 to 25 April.  We have been advised informally that AIBA will be sending several international R&J to officiate at Oceania, and that each Oceania country's national federation will only be able to send one R&J official (though this restriction is subject to confirmation).

The R&J representative from Australia will have air travel and accommodation paid for by BAI. The R&J Committee now invites nominations for the position of R&J representative from Australia to the Oceania Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Because this is an Olympic Qualifying Event, the Committee will prefer a candidate with AIBA experience. Any R&J accredited as referees to AIBA level and who are Australian citizens may nominate themselves directly.

Nominees should state their full name, postal address, telephone contact numbers, and email address (if any), together with a brief summary of their recent (eg 3 years) international experience. Nominations to be sent by email to rjcommittee@boxing.org.au or by fax to BA on 03 9926 1331 or by post to Boxing Australia, Sports House, Albert Road, Albert Park, VIC 3206.

Nominations must be received by 5pm on Friday 21 March 2008. The selected R&J will be contacted shortly thereafter and the decision will be notified on the BAI website.
