Newsletter - April

The Boxing Task Force new Olympic quota reallocation pathway has now been formally approved by the IOC Executive Board and implemented resulting in Boxing Australia receiving a further quota place. Harry Garside, being the highest ranked Asia/Oceania athlete at 63kg has secured a quota place becoming the sixth Boxing Australia athlete to be offered a place. The new qualification system whilst being welcome and beneficial for one of our athletes has meant that the remaining athletes that attended the Asia/Oceania qualification event will now have no further opportunity to secure a quota place. This is a particularly difficult outcome for two of our female athletes that missed out on the narrowest of margins in the BTF world rankings system on account of receiving a bye through the preliminary rounds at the qualification event in Amman. However, the Combat Institute boxing technical lead believes that the new qualification pathway is the fairest method of allocating quota places in the present circumstances.

The Combat Institute of Australia are currently holding a boxing camp at the Gold Coast that was originally scheduled to help prepare the athletes due to attend the World Olympic qualification event and has now become the first phase of a preparation period for a group of our Olympic qualified athletes. Also in attendance are other athletes that will now be using this camp as a preparation block towards their competing at a World Championships selection event that will be taking place sometime this year. All those athletes that competed at the Olympic qualifier in Amman were invited to attend the Gold Coast camp as well as any other athletes categorised at Developing or above. The first extended training camp has seven athletes in attendance, four of whom have achieved an Olympic quota place, and will utilise the facilities at the Griffiths University Campus, Queensland Academy of Sport and the Gold Coast PCYC. All athletes were invited to attend for either a full 10-week period or for two 4-week blocks separated by a period back in their home environment. A number of coaches from the High Performance coaching pool have been appointed to provide support to the athletes during the course of the training camp.
