Newsletter - June

The first face to face meetings between athletes and HP staff took place this week as the travel ban was lifted in Victoria, allowing Head Coach, Kevin Smith to meet up with those Victoria based athletes that competed at the Asia/Oceania Olympic qualification tournament in Amman, Jordan. The next stage of athletes re-engaging with the HP programme staff will be a long-weekend camp in Melbourne being planned from 25-28th June as the use of indoor training facilities is permitted. Invitations to attend the afternoon boxing sessions will also be extended to a wider group of elite athletes and coaches from the Boxing Victoria region.

As the border crossing restrictions begin to be relaxed around the country the same process will be repeated in the other BAL Member Associations with weekend camps currently being planned to take place in Queensland and Western Australia as soon as possible, primarily targeting those athletes and their home coaches that were involved in the recent Olympic Qualifier. The BAL High Performance staff will be aiming to repeat these ‘Cluster’ or ‘Hub’ camps on a six-weekly basis until it becomes more appropriate and suitable to host national camps at the AIS once again.

Another recent development has been the inception of ‘Coaches Corner’ on the BAL web site which is a suite of technical/tactical compilation videos of some of the world's best boxers displaying specific skills in competition. Each video covers a specific boxing technique or tactic and can be used by coaches and athletes to improve their knowledge and understanding. Initial feedback has been encouraging and it is hoped that further material will be showcased over the coming months.

Due to the restricted activity caused by COVID-19,  the National Futures Program has adapted the delivery of its program to ensure that participant engagement is maintained. Each State/Regional Futures athlete and their home coach were added to the National Futures News private Facebook page. In this page, National Futures Coach, Jamie Pittman has been active in daily uploads and kept communication lines open for athlete coaches to contact him over the phone.
The feedback from the community has been incredibly positive and Jamie will continue to stay consistent with communication during these times and continue the development of the Futures athletes alongside the athlete's coaches.
