Newsletter - October

Being based in Queensland for the past month has given the National Head Coach the rare opportunity to get out on the road and travel around the sunshine state visiting a great number of gyms. A warm welcome has been extended by home coaches from the Gold Coast PCYC down in the south to as far north as Do It Boxing in Cairns with visits along the way to Brisbane, Hinterland, Cooroy, Rockhampton, Middlemount, Dysart, Mackay and Townsville. The sessions delivered at each of the gyms have focused on skill acquisition through technical and tactical classes as well as punching and footwork drills together with some fun games and have been received very well by the coaches and athletes in attendance. The very unusual circumstances that the covid virus and the state border restrictions has created leading to the cancellation of international travel and events has the unforeseeable silver lining of increased domestic engagement for the HP programme.

The HP team extended an invitation to those higher categorised athletes (Developing and above) suffering from an inability to maintain access to training facilities and coaching expertise to quarantine in the NT for 14 days prior to travelling on to Queensland to link up with the Head Coach for an extended stay. This invite has been accepted by Harry Garside, Caitlin Parker and Antonia Kay who will all shortly arrive in Brisbane for an as yet unspecified period dependent on the easing of restrictions in their home state of Victoria. These HP athletes will link up with those athletes based in Queensland at various points during their stay including taking part in team training sessions at the East End Gym in Brisbane. It is also hoped that group sessions involving members of the HP Elite team can be arranged at locations throughout Queensland to enable local athletes to join in and work with the qualified and prospective Tokyo Olympic athletes. It will be of great benefit for the upcoming athletes in Queensland to meet with and experience training with such a group of successful BAL world class athletes.
