Newsletter - February

From 1st January 2021, the national High Performance programs for Boxing, Judo and Taekwondo have begun to be delivered by a newly established high performance entity - Combat Institute of Australia (CIA) Limited. This new organisation is jointly owned by the three member National Sporting Organisations, being Boxing Australia, Judo Australia and Australian Taekwondo. The overall strategy is to deliver enhanced High Performance outcomes for all three sports. This will be achieved by the organisation having a sole focus on high performance and supporting services only and the first boxing high performance camp to be delivered by the CIA took place at the AIS in January. Those athletes categorised at ‘Developing’ and above and the athletes that attended last year’s Olympic qualification tournament were all invited to attend. Unfortunately, the recent outbreak of Covid-19 infections in Sydney’s northern beaches and Greater Brisbane meant that not all invitees were able to attend. There was however a fair group of athletes and coaches able to participate in the camp which meant that the main objectives were still realised. Individual Athlete Performance Plans (IAPP) and Athlete Agreements were formulated and signed with the categorised athletes setting out their planned performance environment and competition targets for the coming year.

Olympic Games qualification, attendance and a successful outcome is still the major goal for all our athletes in 2021, whilst also looking further ahead to possible Men’s (Serbia) and Women’s (TBC) World Championships later in the year.
