Newsletter - July

The relaxing of the border restrictions in Victoria allowed the HP programme to deliver a Hub camp in Melbourne targeting those elite athletes most recently competing at international level. The numbers involved were limited by the current guidelines in place but there was an enthusiastic response from the invitees and it turned out to be an amazing camp. The group assembled on a Thursday afternoon and the training itinerary began with a boxing session at the Collingwood gym. Attendee Jason Mallia made the Crew Fitness and Performance state of the art facility available to the team for strength and conditioning sessions over the 3 days of the camp headed up by Nigel Bowers from the ACTAS. Morning running sessions took place in Fitzroy park just across from the team accommodation on East Albert street.

The HP team also used the camp as an opportunity to review and refine the Individual Performance Plans (IPP’s) of those athletes categorised at developing or above helping them to reset their goals and identify areas for improvement or increased focus. The feedback from the athletes involved was very positive and all agreed that this was a fantastic initiative and are all looking forward to the next camp in the not too distant future, state restrictions permitting. The next localised HP camp is set to take place in Queensland in late July.

Another initiative that has received amazing feedback has been the release of the BAL technical and tactical skills identification videos on the BAL website and Facebook page. The videos have been engaging both athletes and coaches in great numbers and their observational entertainment content has enabled some very important technical and tactical topics to be broached and delivered en masse. This course of action and method of reaching out and engaging with the wider BAL boxing community will continue over the coming months.

With restrictions easing around Australia, the National Futures program recommenced with State Futures Camps in the ACT, NSW, WA and SA, after 9 weeks of the program being online. It was fantastic to see the State's and Territorie's best performing Junior and Youth boxers maintaining their boxing and fitness during the isolation period.

Looking forward to camps being present in QLD, SA and NSW in July.

Fantastic news was announced over the weekend for the Youth World Championships with AIBA announcing they are not cancelling the Tournament but postponing until April 10-24 2021.
