Lewis Joins Watts on Rio Olympics Ticket

Daniel Lewis is set to join Shelley Watts in the Rio boxing team after he won bronze at the Asian Oceania Olympic qualifiers in China on Friday afternoon.

It was a welcome change of fortune for Lewis, who has had his career thwarted by injury and bad luck in recent years.

22-year-old Lewis beat Mongolia’s Shinebayar Narmandakh in a unanimous points decision to wrap up the Olympics position, which follows on from Shelley Watts earning Australia’s first Olympics spot 24 hours earlier.

Sydney-based Lewis looked set for a Commonwealth Games medal in Glasgow, before he suffered a cut eye after an accidental helmet clash which ruled him out of the rest of the event.

12 months earlier Lewis battled glandular fever at the World Boxing Championships, and when he was just 17-years-old his London Olympic dream was brought to an end when he had his jaw broken during Olympic qualifiers.

Australia will be hoping to qualify a third boxer when Jason Whateley boxes off for bronze on Saturday afternoon.
