ASC
announces ‘additional’ funding for
boxing and then reduces it!
The
Australian Sports Commission (ASC) late last Friday afternoon advised
BAI directly and by press release announced that BAI would receive from
the ASC 'additional' Boxing High Performance Program funding of
$460,000 pa.
Then on
Monday morning the ASC advised BAI that the existing AIS Boxing High
Performance Program is to cease. BAI had previously been informed that
the AIS Boxing High Performance Program was notionally funded for
$644,900 for this financial year (2010-2011).
Accordingly,
these decisions result in:
* a reduction in ASC/AIS funding of boxing of approximately $185,000 pa
for 2011-2012 (but not necessarily for 2010-2011), and
* the termination of the Boxing High Performance Program at the
Canberra campus of the AIS.
BAI has
been advised that a new Boxing HPP funded by the $460,000 pa can
commence, but not at the AIS, upon agreement being reached between BAI
and the ASC.
BAI was
advised, also, that along with all other National Sporting
Organisation's it will be assessed for future funding support after the
2012 Olympics against commitments reached by agreement in the new
Boxing HPP agreement.
And, the
NTID Program is to continue until at least 2012.
The
decision to terminate the AIS Boxing HPP at the AIS is very
disappointing – especially as it was immediately preceded by a
misleading public announcement of ‘additional’ funding for the sport.
The BAI
Board intends to ascertain options for creation and establishment of a
new Boxing HPP as soon as possible. If any person believes they could
assist in regard to establishment of the new Boxing HPP, their advice
of the assistance they could provide is invited.

AUSTRALIAN R&J INTERNATIONAL APPOINTMENTS
Steve Warn and Ann Tindall
have been
appointed by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) to officiate
at important international tournaments.
Steve Warn has been appointed a
Referee and Judge to the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be held in New
Delhi, India, in October.
Ann Tindall has been appointed
a Judge to the 2010 Elite Women’s World Championships to be held in
Bridgetown, Barbados, in September.
As part of a strategy to ensure
honesty in officiating in international boxing, AIBA
now directly appoints officials to important international tournaments.
This strategy has removed the ability of national boxing associations
to have ‘influence’ over officials through the power of selection of
them.
Congratulations to Steve and
Ann. We are very pleased that AIBA has recognized their skill and will
entrust them along with the other appointed officials to conduct these
important tournaments.

DAMIEN
HOOPER WINS GOLD
Damien Hooper yesterday
boxed his way
into international and Australian boxing history by becoming the first
Youth Olympic Games Middleweight Champion.
And, supported by Brett Mather
who did Australia proud by winning the Lightweight Silver Medal, they
ranked Australian Youth boxing number 3 in the world at the Youth
Olympic Games.
Damien and Brett earlier this
year were among 7 members of the Australian Team to the Youth World
Championships. A few of us before that Championships expressed the view
they were the strongest Youth Team ever to represent Australia – and
they proved it through their ‘Top Ten’ finish at the World
Championships. Damien and Brett, of course, won respectively Silver and
Bronze Medals – the experience of which they each utilized in Singapore
to go one better. By finishing in the top four in their weight
categories in the Youth World Championships in Azerbaijan they also won
the right to box at the Youth Olympic Games. A number of other Team
members, with a little luck, could possibly have joined them, in
particular, Jackson Woods.
Congratulations to Damien and
Brett on their successes in the first ever Youth Olympic Games, and
good wishes to all of our 2010 Australian Youth Team boxers as they
progress in our sport – they have made this a great year for Australian
boxing.

GREAT
WINS AT YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES
Congratulations to Brett
Mather and Damien Hooper for their great wins over the weekend in
Singapore in the Youth Olympic Games.
Brett Mather drew a bye and
then on Sunday beat the Mexican champion to move into the Gold Medal
bout. Brett had a great second round to move from 0-2 to 4-3 and then
with only seconds remaining in the last round went in front to win it
8-7. It was a real never-say-beaten effort executed with genuine boxing
skill.
Damien did not draw a bye in
the first round - instead he drew the World Champion (Joe
Ward-Ireland), and then defeated him 2-4. Yesterday, Damien defeated
the Hungarian Champion 4-0. Both wins were achieved with real skill and
nous.
The boxing at the YOG can be
seen live on both the Youth Olympic Games and AIBA websites. For more
information visit http://singapore2010.olympics.com.au, http://aiba.org, and you
can watch the fights live at http://www.youtholympicgames.org
Good luck
from us all to Brett and Damien as
they box for 'Gold' in Singapore.

APPOINTMENT
OF NEW BAI BOARD DIRECTOR
The BAI Board is pleased to advise that Mr. Jim Ferguson,
former CEO of the Australian Sports Commission, has accepted an
invitation to become a Director of BAI. The BAI Board welcomes Jim and
looks forward to his important counsel.
NEW COMMONWEALTH GAMES TEAM SECTION MANAGER
Mick Hastings for personal reasons has resigned from his
position as Section Manager
of the Australian Boxing Team to the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
The Australian Commonwealth Games Association, following
nomination to it by the BAI Board, has appointed David Pike to be the
new Section Manager of the Australian Boxing Team to the Commonwealth
Games. David was the Team Manager of the Australian Team to the 2009
Men’s World Championships and officiated at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth
Games in India
as an R&J. He holds a senior commander’s role in the Victoria
Police.
AUSTRALIAN
BOXERS AT YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES
Brett Mather (Lightweight Bronze medalist in this year’s
Youth World Championships) and Damien Hooper (Middleweight Silver
medalist in this year’s Youth World Championships) are
in Singapore with coaches Mark Wilson and John Florenca for the Youth
Olympic Games
– you can follow their progress on the Youth Olympic Games and AIBA
websites.
FUTURE
GOVERNMENT SUPPORT OF AMATEUR BOXING
Until the Federal election is concluded and a Government
elected, the Board of the Australian Sports Commission has announced it
will not be making decisions regarding future funding of Australian
sport.
The BAI Board has made
submissions to the ASC for increased funding to introduce a Women’s
High Performance Program, to introduce a Youth International
Competition Program, to expand the NTID Program both among indigenous
youth and Australian youth generally including girls, and to establish
a training ‘hub’ at the AIS for Oceania and south-east Asia coaches,
R&J’s and boxers.
In accordance with the ASC
Board's decision there has not been any response to the above
submissions. However, the BAI Board is concerned that the High
Performance Boxing Program, although
continuing to be funded at its present level, may be moved off the AIS’s
Canberra campus. If that eventuates the
value of the existing HPP Program funding will be diminished, and the
boxing facility at the AIS will be lost and not be available for the
use of the NTID Program and it will not be possible to take up the
opportunity to establish a training 'hub' for Oceania and South-East
Asia amateur boxing at the AIS.

DAMIEN HOOPER IN GOLD MEDAL BOUT
Damien Hooper (Q'ld) last night in Baku, Azerbaijan,
boxed his way into the Youth World Championships middleweight gold
medal bout to be held tonight our time. Damien defeated Harcsa Zoltan
of Hungary 5:11. The first Round was 3:3, Damien edged ahead in the
second Round 2:3 to lead 5:6, and then took the final Round 0:5.
Tonight he boxes as the 'underdog' against reigning World Junior
middleweight champion Joe Ward of Ireland. He will be seconded by Marc
Wilson. And, in the crowd, no doubt he will receive plenty of support
from the only other Australian we know to be in Baku, Brett Mather.
Brett yesterday 'lowered his colours' to Evaldas Petrauskas in the U60
kg lightweight semi-final. In what the AIBA website described as
'the morning's most thrilling bout' Brett and the Lithuanian stood toe
to toe and traded 'flurries of punches' in what was obviously a titanic
second round with each taking 8-counts before Brett took a second
8-count and the ref called it a day. Brett, following on from his great
form at last year's Arafura Games, has had a terrific tournament and
defeated the champions of Kenya, Egypt and Nigeria. He is now a Youth
World Championship's Bronze Medallist.
Also boxing last night was Joe Parker of New Zealand in the super
heavyweight division. Joe was seconded by Marc Wilson. AIBA's scribe
also liked this bout and described it as 'the day's crowd-pleaser'.
Unfortunately, after a very close bout in which Joe and Croatia's Filip
Hrgovic went punch for punch the Croatian pulled away to win 6:8.
Australia amateur boxing has had a great tournament with three boxers
Jackson Woods U48 kg., Brett Mather U60 kg and Damien Hooper U75 kg
reaching the last eight in their weight categories - and Brett and
Damien medalling. Our best result ever at a World Championships.
Good luck to Damien tonight as he boxes to be World Champion.

AUSTRALIANS ADVANCE INTO QUARTER FINALS AT WORLD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS
Jackson Woods (Tas.) U48 kg., Brett Mather (W.A.) U60
kg and Damien Hooper (Q'ld.) U75 kg last night each won their way into
the last eight in their weight categories at the Youth World
Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Jackson defeated Charlie Edwards of England. At the end of Round 1 they
were level 0:0, Edwards moved ahead 2:0 in Round 2, but Jackson
finished strongly to level it 2:2 in Round 3. On count-back the Judges
had them level at 4:4, but then by Judges' vote awarded the bout 3:2 to
Jackson. Jackson meets Cuba today to decide which boxer advances to the
Semi-Finals.
Brett Mather defeated Walid Sedik Mohamed of Egypt 5:2. Mohamed took
the first Round 0:1, and Round 2 was equally scored 1:1 with
Mohamed leading 1:2 going into Round 3, but Brett in a storming finish
won the third Round 4:0 and the bout. Brett today meets Nigeria to
decide who moves into the Semi-Finals.
Damien Hooper defeated Tyron Zeuge (Germany) 3:0. Round 1 was locked-up
at 0:0, Damien moved ahead 1:0 in Round 2, and won the last Round
against a determined opponent 2:0. Damien boxes China tonight for entry
into the Semi-Finals.
A really great day for Australian boxing as Jackson, Brett and Damien defeated world class opponents.
If you read this fellas, good luck from all of us at home, we'll be following tonight's bouts. Go for it!

AUSTRALIANS GOING FOR GOLD AT WORLD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Youth World Championships for Boxing is underway
in Baku, Azerbaijan. The event, which was delayed by 2 days due to the
volcano ash clouds over Europe preventing the arrival of some teams,
has just completed Day 4 of competition.
Australia is represented by Jackson Woods U48 kg (Tas), Jayden Hansen
U54 kg (WA), Brandon Ogilvie U57 kg (WA), Brett Mather U60 kg (WA),
Carlin Utia 69 kg (Qld), Damien Hooper U75 kg (Qld), Rohan Murdock U81
kg (Qld), Marc Wilson (Qld), Coach, and Craig Woods (Tas),
Assistant Coach.
Getting a clear picture of Australian bout results was initially
difficult due to difficulties that AIBA was obviously experiencing with
its website reporting of the Championships. However, with the
assistance of other advice AIBA provided, the correction of the AIBA
website and email contact from Marc Wilson we can advise that following
the conclusion of Day 4 that results for Australian boxers to date are:
U48kg - Jackson Woods has defeated Hungary 24:0 and Ghana 7:1
U54kg - Jayden Hansen lost to Thailand 2:12
U57kg - Brandon Ogilvie defeated Samoa 6:5 and lost to Roumania 0:2
U60 kg - Brett Mather defeated Kenya 10:0
U69kg - Carlin Utia defeated N. Charalampolis (New Zealand) 10:5 and lost to Algeria 3:4
U75kg - Damien Hooper defeated Kyrgyzstan 11:4
U81kg - Rohan Murdock lost to Ecuador 3:5
Congratulations to Jayden Hansen, Brandon Ogilvie, Carlin Utia and
Rohan Murdock for competing in the World Championships. We look forward
to them, and Australian boxing through them, gaining from this great
experience.
Today - Thursday 29 April:
* Jackson Woods competes against England
* Brett Mather competes against Egypt
* Damien Hooper competes against Germany
Good luck to Jackson, Brett and Damien who are still 'going for gold'.

Australian
Women's results at Turkish Prime Ministry Tournament
The Australian Women's Team for the World
Championships in September has just competed in the first Turkish Prime
Ministry Tournament, held in Ankara (6-11 April).
Australia's Claire Ghabrial won her semi-final in a sensational
contest, beating Oleksandra Sydorenko of Ukraine 8:1. Claire then won
the gold medal by walk-over. (We previously reported that Claire won
silver, because of an error in the results provided to us from
Turkey). Well done Claire!
Earlier in the week, Kelly McGrath was unlucky to
lose to Ukraine's
Anna Rogovich on a countback, while Jessica Bouquet lost to Turkey's
Gulsum Tatar. Full results here (noting that there is at least one
error, relating to Claire's finals bout)

The
results of the 1st Selection Trials for the 2010 Commonwealth Games
Team, and results of the Selection Event for the Womens World
Championships, held in Fremantle WA 18-21 March are
available on our RESULTS page.
For the first time in Australia, the male athletes competing for the
CG Team were seeded prior to the draw if they had finished in the final
at Nationals 2009 or competed for Oceania in the 2009 AIBA President's
Cup. As a result of this the best athletes were drawn to meet in
the final. This is also the first time the new weight categories
have been used in Australia at the national level - they were changed
at the Olympic level for 2012 and are being introduced internationally
from 1 September.
The two finalists from each weight category will form the Shadow
Squad for the Commonwealth Games. On 4 July these athletes will
box each other with the winner to be nominated to the ACGA for
participation in Delhi.
The winner from the Finals will depart on 4 April for a tournament in
Russia before heading to Cuba for 6 weeks of training and
competition. The runner-up in the Final will compete against an
Irish team in Alice Springs on 16 April before heading to Cuba for 5
weeks of training and competition.
